View Full Version : Unstable lean, not flexxing

Hey Guys. I have a 94 ZJ I built some Front Radius Style Long Arms, Lengthen the Rear Arms and Running a RE 7.5" front TJ Coil in the Front and a RK 4" Front TJ coil in the Rear along with a 1" spacer.....Which netted me around 7" of lift.

I got to try out this weekend up Rausch Creek. But I keep getting a very unstable feeling with it. It didnt want to come back over to "Level". If I'd be on a rock it would start to flex, then send the entire body leaning over to the side it would flex on. It would not come back to "level" until I flex it back the other way or I ended up on level ground. The rear was flexxing Awesome. But the Front seemed like I could never stuff a tire. It worked the rear suspenion the most.

I'm running a Poly Bushing at the front lower axle, factory rubbers at upper axle, and heim joints in the other two locations. I unhooked one upper arm to see if its binding. It made zero difference in flexing.

What do you guys think? I'll post up some pics from the back yard and see what you think.

Thanks guys
Rick

See how the rear isnt flexing? and its leaning hard to the drivers side. I have no rear sway bar.

Pulling the front end up it seems to try to work....

The front coils in the rear is what is hurting you. they have a higher spring rate and need more weight on them to compress. Since they are designed for a TJ front they are set up to support/flex with the weight of an engine.

Plus ZJs suck like that.

When I'm fully loaded for a day trip, I do have a fullsize spare, at min a 100lbs worth of tools and a cooler full of ice.

Don't think thats enough?

I've been thinking it over with one of the guys I went out with this weekend and he beleives my issue is running to much lift in the rear on the short arms. It was only a Temp thing to get out wheelin the rest of the season, but it seems this has stopped me for now.

Thanks
Rick

Yeah short arms isnt helping any, but i would imagine that spring rate has a little to do with it too. I have a set of front coils in the rear of mine (on short arms) and it flexes like ass too. The tippy feeling does not inspire confidence on the trail.

After discussing this with a few other guys....I've decided to make a big step.

I'm Going Rear Leafs.....

Why on earth would you go to rear leafs? Notice how many of us YJ owners go to links? There is a reason for that. Go long arm on the rear end and put a sway bar on it.

This has to be the dumbest decision I have heard on this board so far.:lol::lol:

Seriously!?!? Leafs suck

Here are your issues.

Coils spirngs too stiff
No sway bar
Horrible short arm link geometry.

Solution...

Long arm
Softer coils
Antirock

It is probably 90% suspension geometery and 10% wrong spring application causing it to handle this way. I'd try to figure out if the problem is in your front or rear suspension before just replacing the rear suspension.

Stupid question: Are you sure your rear control arm bolts aren't overtightened?

I saw a dude over on pirate that put XJ leaves in the rear of his ZJ and it worked great. You'd basically be buiding an XJ, and I like XJ's. I say go for it. :stir:

you have to work at it. this kid's rig a few weeks ago impressed the hell out of me.

Nah they arent over tightened, I checked everything with two wrenches, no impact.

There only seems to be a handful of guys running leaf springs. they mostly have been using XJ springs. I had 2 xj's and built a leaf pack out of a XJ main leaf and S10 leafs for the rest of them. Gave around 4" of lift, Flexxed awesome and rode nice.

Plus I'd like to build something different. I'm not looking to go wild with fancy long arms and coils. I like to keep it simple.

Thanks

Shane, do you know any info on that ZJ?

Thanks

As they mentioned over on mallcrawlin you really need to just find shorter coils for those 34" tires and short arms you have and alot of your problems will be solved till your ready to get those bigger tires and axles. I have 36" tires on my zj now with 7 to 8" of lift and with a little bit of trimming i could fit 38's. I ran 33's on 4.5" coils with no rubbing at all. Also you'll notice that your steering will be whole lot better.

What is simple about putting a completely different suspension under a truck? LOL
