View Full Version : Looking for shops

Hi all,
Had a question regarding local shops in the Frederick Co. area that are capable of doing a straight axle swap? I am still in the learning/ purchasing stages of this build, but would like to have all my resources together come time to ship my rig off. As of now I do all own work, but not sure if I have the means to do an SAS.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

There aren't any in Frederick Co. that I could recommend. Take it to Appalachian Offroad in Westminster.

I just looked him up online, thank you.
AOI can do it.
How are you doing it? Leafs or Links? I did a swap leaf sprung swap on my Tacoma with a diamond axle

I would like to go with the link setup. I plan on using a 76’ F250 axle. However i don't appose going with the leaf.

Why a Dana 44? Seems to be a bit light of an axle for a tundra.

Thats funny, i was just talking to my co worker about this. Being that it is a smaller truck i didn't think a D60 would be necessary. Then again I’ve never took wheelin to this level, so it is all kinda new to me. I’d rather do it right the first time around.

D44 is going to be a waste of time for ya. Go straight to a HP60.

I agree. Do the 60 the first time around.

What vehicle are they off of?
What do you plan to do with the truck?
I will retire the truck from the road once all has been done. To sum it up at first I’d like to have a good all around off road rig if that is possible. In time I will dial the rig in more on what I like (rocks, mud trail etc).

you want ford snowfighter 60s since you have a driversdrop tcase
king pin, high pinion.

im all about building something different if you are sure that is what you want to wheel...that being said that tundra will last less then 6 months if you start wheeling with these guys...it is about 2 feet to wide to maintain any straight panel on it as tight as the trails are around here....ask shane to post some progression pics from the jimmy to the jizz to whatever that rockwell thing is now...and look at the dates in the corner...prolly less then 2 years...of course he cant drive for shit but thats beside the point...
take a right seat with someone up at RC or bigdogs before you spend money sasing the tundra....not trying to talk you out of it but that could make a nice towrig for something smaller...fj40 taco 4runner...whatever:cheers:

I agree with this guy.... Hell, for the money you'll drop on an axle and a SAS, you could probably buy a nice built trail rig that you won't have to worry about banging up.

Yeah I bet if you were smart about it, you could get a lightweight trailer and a rig for under $6k, which is a much better setup. No worries about breaking and getting to work the next day.

Good morning,
Thanks for all your input fellas. Like I was saying this truck will be taken off the road after project is complete and I don’t care too much if I beat it all to hell, I will have another vehicle to drive to work lol. However I made my way up to the “All Breeds Jeep Show” in York Pa this Saturday to get ideas from other rigs and I got to say I was totally stoked by what I saw. It has kinda put me in another frame of mind about what I would like to build.
On the riding shotgun remark, if there is anyone that would be willing to let a noob take a spin let me know, that would be sweet! I would like to take my truck up to RC just to see what she can do on some lite trails and get some more experience behind the wheel. I’ll keep my eyes open for next big turn out.
BTW: This will be my first truck/ buggy build. I’m coming over from the spots car world.

Just wanted to share some links to show off some SAS Tundras. Any thoughts?

After you enter the site one the top left hand side of screen there are screen names in green. If you pic these links it will display some wicked SAS Tundras.

I have a good idea on how hard you guys are on your rigs man. I have nothing but respect for you all and what you do. For myself, I will probably not get that out of hand with THIS truck, I just want to build something different that is capable in all terrains.
Should I assume I’ve come to the wrong place for help?

You didn't come to the wrong place and am I sure noone is trying to be rude, they are just stating how things have gone with most of us..
"Gonna keep it nice and drive it on the road."
"Might as well put on a small lift and run some mud tires."
"What the heck I think I can jump up a tire size on it if I trim the flares."
"WTB: Dana 44's"
"WTB: Dana 60's"
"Gonna Pull the tags. Anyone have a source for insurance for a trail rig?"
"For Sale: Trail Rig, trade for Buggy"
Check out 01Tundra's build thread on Pirate...
It'll be your future :P
The best thing you can do is plan for the eventual, i.e. Dana 60s over Dana 44.
I wish I did 60s on my Tacoma, but for what I have in my diamond axle, I'll have to make it work

Naw I did not feel anyone was being rude, i have a great sense of humor:). I just don’t want to spin my wheels that’s all. At this point I am riding the fence between truck and buggy. I see much potential in both. I guess what I need is some exposure to both truck and buggy on the trails to get a better idea of what I want to do and to see how they both perform. I plan on making a trip to RC soon. I’m sure this will give me a better idea of which direction I want to go. One thing is for sure I love the sport of wheeling and want to become more active in it:cheers:

http://www.marylandcreepers.com/showthread.php?t=1006 something like this would wheel great and cost you less then a front axle for the tundra. Get out there, wheel and see what you like, then sell it for about the same price when you are ready for something else.

This is a terrific idea. The most I can see it possibly costing you is $1500, and it could potentially save you 10's of thousands and allow you to do it right the first time. The little sammi would be a great way to learn lots of valuable skills on the trail that will be harder to pick up in the Tundra.

A Samuri huh? Great idea! You are right about cheaper, right now my Tundra build is totaling around 10-15k and that s with me doing my own work with a sprung front end. I’ve done my time dumping tons of money into my rides, I just want something I can have fun in for less. Thank you for the invite to ride shotgun, I will be coming up to RC in August. How can I locate the group?

Pick up a light weight trailer and your tundra will haul a sammi like that around no problem. Like Dan said, sell it when you know what you want and most likely it won't have cost you very much for a whole lot of learning and fun.
What is your tundra worth now? You need to figure that into it also. Once you go through with all the mods you will invest the 15K and probably decrease the value of the truck at the same time.
If you come up on the 22nd the competition will be going on. We also have a club event the weekend prior but the competition would be a great opportunity to watch a lot of different vehicles with all types of suspensions, a wide range of $$ invested, and how they handle on the terrain we wheel. Plus I'm sure you'll catch at least a few rollovers

Unfortunatly, I won't be wheeling on Sunday the 23rd or I'd offer to take you out.

Lets put it this way, the money I have estimated to put into the SAS cost much more than this old truck is worth now. Maybe a few years down the road once I’ve invested more time into a cheaper rig and get more acquainted with wheelin, then ill try to build this truck up.
Thanks for the info on RC and for the offer to ride shotgun. I’m sure once I get into a rig ill be spending ample time up the road:)

Yeah, by the way, I SASed a 95 Pathfinder a few years ago, and it has never been quite what I wanted because its what I had, and it keeps costing me money and I don't wheel it much. Kinda wish I had done something else, but I was young, stupid and it was my first car, so I wanted to make something of it.
get a trailer like this http://baltimore.craigslist.org/cto/1294974964.html and your tundra will have no problem moving a sami around. For 5k you could have a rig and trailer, ready to rock.

Quality links, thank you. Yeah this old truck can pull just about anything within reason, I’ve had the bed loaded at 1800LBS before. It is a work horse in-a-half. Couple Tundra guys I’ve been talking to have shared their truck build cost and it is probably more than I want to spend right now. I want to be able to enjoy this, not go broke from it. I never thought I’d say it, but I kinda like that Samuri lol I bet it rolls easy though.

Actually you'd be really really suprised what a sami can do. I've wheeled the hell out of a sprung over sami on 33's on stock width axles and it will keep up with much larger vehicles through some very ruff stuff. That one is on toy axles which are wider then stock, so it should be super stable. Plus that whole rolling thing was a myth propagated by falsified testing by Consumer Reports.
