K last week thrusday dorve my YJ to work in the rain and it died on me on Rt50. Got it towed back to my house and one of my fuel filters was dry(clear lens), so thought it was my fuel pump and the other filter. I replaced my fuel filter and it started right up. Drove it yesterday and everything was fine, this morning it ran fine until I got a mile from work and it start dying on me again.
Got it to my work and looked at the fuel filter and it had fuel in it but it was dirty and still won't start. I have spark and it cranks just doesn't start.

So I am replacing the fuel filter again and fuel pump today but I am thinking that my supply fuel line might be rusted out and that would suck. Also my engine temp gauge was going crazy, just moving kinda of fast back and forth. Never seen that do it before but I do remember seeing it the 1st time she died on me. I dont have a clue if they are realated or not. When she is running she runs fine.

Any help would but appericated.

Fuel pump.

Vapor lock maybe? What condition are your rubber lines in? Maybe you're sucking the supply line closed and its collapsing.

I am thinking the fuel pump too Rippy. Again hope its not the supply line.

All the rubber lines are good, replaced them about 2yrs ago.

Any idea why my temp gauge is going crazy? think they are related? and where is the temp sensor on the 4.2?

Rear of the head.

Are you fuel injected yet? Still mechanical pump? If so, it may not be the fuel pump.....

not fuel injected, still running carb.

Is the return line still hooked up and clear? Vapor lock? Could you have a electrical short cutting out the truck and making the temp gauge go crazy?

My best guess is vapor lock.

Ok, I replaced the fuel pump and that was the cause of the YJ stallin, it(the fuel pump) didn't look to pretty on the inside.
The temp gauge is still going crazy sometimes, this I am not sure why? Does anyone know where my temp sensor is? It's a 88 4.2l carb. I think I might of found it but not sure, thinking it is on the intake manifold? Right near the hose that comes off the thermo housing that goes to the manifold. Is this it?

Temp sensor is on the rear of the engine, driver's side. It is a single wire hookup. Look at the corner of the engine.

I just fixed the cooling issue I had on my 89 4.2L. The water pump was worn out (the inside metal was pitted) and I replaced it along with a new t-stat.

Also, check if you have the right amount of coolant in there. If mine was low, it would be o.k. at speed but go up at idle.

K so it the single wire sensor on the intake manifold in the rear. Coolant level is good and was just drained and filled(overflow tank).

Be warned. Mine does this thing where it will get hot and then drop right on initial warm up.

Does it bounce around? If so then it is a coolant level issue or the wire is loose and/or frayed.

Yeah it just started last week with the bouncing around thing and doesnt do it everytime.
Mine looks like it has a hard line going to it? I took a pic this morning and wil post it in a min.

Nope. It is not on the manifold.

Look on the block itself on the rear corner.

hmmmmm OK thanks for the help.

Like Will said, it's a single wire small sensor at the very rear of the head.

It should look like this:

Thanks Rippy, if this doesn't work then looks like I am going with AutoMeter gauges.
