I was going for something ugly enough to make my technicolor tow rig look good. I figured it doesn't get any uglier than this.

Thanks for the compliments. Yeah, I gotta stay Chevy. I think it looks like a logging skidder. I have a winch for the front and something else up there has to change. I have a CJ front clip and I'll have a spare chevy front clip to...

I'd like to sneak the Rad and a dog seat in the back.

The wife is definitly going to be painting her butt off soon.

md4wheelin
10-07-2009, 10:08 PM
not really sure, not that bad because when my girl ran it for a week or two while her escalade was getting worked on, it took about a tank of gas for the week to run it from towson to essex and back everyday with the 32"swampers. if you wanted I could run it and find out for you. Also it does get alot better gas mileage with the smaller 31" Michelins on it.

I ran one coolant line today. Need to get pipe and hose to finish that up. Then I threw some door bars in on the passenger side. They aren't ideal but, it's all the DOM I have and they miss the seats. Then I put a skin on just to see what it was going to look like. My lighting, blackberry camera, and photographer abilities suck.

I learned a lesson today. Even with 12 clamps, 2 6' square stocks, and 2 3" ratchet straps it's a mutha to bend 5' of 1/8" aluminum. I screwed my roof on and tried to bend a visor. I nearly had my head taken off 3 times and it just springs back. My stupid break is only 3'.

I'm not making the visor just for the red neck look. I'm planning on a lexan windsheild and wipers in the future. The visor will make 1 less spot for it to leak.

This weekend I wired the winch, put the roof on, and finished a lot of little things. My wife finished the first window net and it is perfect. I used 3/8 rod and seatbelt hardware. She used my kids old trapoline net and setbelt straps to sew the net.

Geeze, what'd ya break there? Ujoint or stub shaft? Are you binding the joints up at full lock?

I still have that 78-79 ford shortside inner and stub that I brought up to the November race for you. It won't work for my application let me know if you're interested in it.

Although, based on your track record I'd recommend some alloy shafts!
Seems strange the ears are breaking before the 30 spline stub though.....

Heavychevy
03-23-2010, 01:08 PM
I broke both shafts and the U joint. Funny how that happens when they are welded together. Thanks for the offer, I might be interested in the inner for a spare. My outers are Chevy 35 spline.

I should be ordering Alloys this week.

Happy Bear
03-23-2010, 02:44 PM
Oh, so is this a "repaired" axleshaft from last time? What was welded in place? The ears had stretched so you were retaining the u joints from moving with tack welds?

Heavychevy
03-23-2010, 07:03 PM
This was a high speed fix. The yokes were WAY stretched. I welded the crap out of em.:D

We made it out to RC for 1 last test and tune today.

I did about 10 or 15 laps with Bigelow banging the shit out of it. It started to get hot and the brakes started to fade. I pulled a Dukes of Hazard and stood that bitch up on the drivers side tires at about 40. Can't believe it didn't go over. I drove out of it. We stopped for some minor repairs.

Then I ran about 10 or 15 laps at our race speed (Moderate). The rig performed great. I totally lost my brakes but, I was the only one on the course at this point. Time to eliminate the proportioning valve, replace the master cylinder, add the rear line lock and get some good braking. The brakes have been shitty at best ever since I've owned it. rerouting a lot of this stuff will be a big improvement.

This week will be killer, we've got a lot to accomplish to be 100% ready. Our goal is to keep the rig together and finish the race at all costs.

See ya at RCQ!

Master cylinder and line lock
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p42/bretkeller/utf-8BL01lZGlhIENhcmQvQmxhY2tCZX-9.jpg

I added some gussets to the front shock tabs now that it's got air shocks up front.
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p42/bretkeller/utf-8BL01lZGlhIENhcmQvQmxhY2tCZX-10.jpg

My tie rod has been dangerously close to the oil pan. It must have just "kissed" it a few times this weekend. I'll be adding some cc's and psi's to the shocks to hydrolock them further and adding some spacers to the bump stops.

The more work I do the more I find to do.

I was giving rides during my kids birthday today and snap. Another freakin ujoint and both shafts. Wasn't even beating it hard. Time to rebuild the king pins too.

Stock shafts. Chromo just came in Saturday. I shimmed the wore out king pins with washers last fall. I believe the knuckle is dropping and creating a bind. 37's on dirt shouldn't break even stock shafts.

We've had some fuel delivery issues in past races. I replumbed the fuel lines, putting the pump closest to the fuel cell and moving everything to an accessible area. The glass filter after the big filter is just to see fuel moving.

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p42/bretkeller/utf-8BSU1HMDAwNjYtMjAxMDA5MTctMTYxMS5qcGc.jpg

Then I added an idiot light to the dash to indicate that the pump has power. While I was at it I put an override push button in to throw power to the fuel pump for trouble shooting.
