The park staff set up a test course for the RCROCS racing drivers Saturday and Dan ran his newly completed pile around the test course. I now know that the only reason Dan asked me to ride bitch was to get me back for last year's race. His truck ran great. I was truly surprised at how few issues he had on it's first run.

We got and wheeled a bit, which was nice. We haven't done much of that lately. The weather cleared up and it turned into a decent day Sunday.

I broke an axle shaft, which is not a big deal when you bring the right parts and tools. I did not. I borrowed a shaft from Dan but no one at RC had the 7/16 hex key we needed to remove my hubs. We ended up filing down Dan's 9/16 hex key to 7/16. Saturday was done. We got back out and wheeled Sunday.

So this weekend's lesson is, you don't need to bring tools and spares of you wheel with Dan.

Dan has some pix from wheeling on Sunday. This is my cellphone pic highlight reel.

When he built my front axle, Bosley lectured me about buying tools to fit all the allen head bolts.
Was that a Yukon or a stock shaft?

Stock. The Yukon long side was back-ordered. Bosley said the Yukons have arrived so I should have a replacement di-rectly.

That's the kind of wheeling that got me hooked on this stuff years ago. Just a damned good time. The Creepers need to get back to a bit of this stuff. I literally had a shop worth of tools in the truck, yet I still didn't have 7/16" hex. A determined person with a 9/16 hex and a file will make it happen though.

Pics in no particular order:

Vids of Alan on Walk in the Park.

Watching that first video reminds me of how far that thing will turn. I was spotting him thru Insanity, told him "hard driver" and then it was, "whoa, not that hard".

Great pics, makes me sorry I didn't join you.

I was taking it easy on the turning because the spare shaft Dan lent me wasn't clearanced. :D

Had you guys clearanced the stock shaft that broke?

The broke shaft was clearanced. If you look close at the broke axle pic in the first post you can see the machining on the yoke.

Yea, I thought so. What was the expected life of that shaft? I really wouldn't of known what to expect, were you thinking you could break it?

I really didn't expect to break it running 37's.
I was going straight up hill, so it didn't break because it was bound. We didn't even hear it break. After I flopped we noticed the tire wasn't turning.
I was running red labels this past weekend, up til now we have only run blue labels. I don't know if the change in tires made a difference or if that's all the life we can expect out of a stock shaft.

It was a weird break. No pop, bang, or anything. We also got a good lesson in full circle versus C-clip joints too.

the 7/16 hex key we needed to remove my hubs. We ended up filing down Dan's 9/16 hex key to 7/16.

After picking up a 7/16 hex key I have discovered the actual size key needed for the Ford unit bearings is 12mm. I thought I would post a correction just in case anyone was relying on my spectacular tech.
