He's addicted already.
2 1/2 years old and the right seat isn't good enough anymore
He wants to drive it over the speed-bumps by himself. not on the street mind you just over the bumps.

Anyone know of any mild Fire-road type trails near Hickory NC?

YES!
Well, it's a small hike from Hickory,, but not bad.
Look up Brown Mountain ORV park.
Technically it's an ATV park, but Trail 1 is the main "road" that all the others spider off of, and is a fun drive for a 4x4 truck (and IIRc is the only trail that trucks are allowed on). A stocker vehicle can do it OK, just have to be careful for some washed out areas and/or/ mudholes. Good for an afternoon jaunt, some spots that can be fun if you want to play a little.
FYI here's a good list from NC4x4

start them young and teach them right. I started mine that anytime they get in the rigs they put a helmet on. The 4 year old knows every rig right down to the difference between Campbells IFS rig and his straight axled rig. The 2 year old is a maniac. I hope they drive twice as good as I do. Good luck with them.
Check out the Muddevils4x4 club down there in NC. They has some easy ground to ride on. They also have a pretty active website.

It's good to see a pic after you told me the story the other night. Good stuff Dave. I'll buzz you about the range later this week :)

We took my 11 month old to a local event this past weekend. We idled from the trailer to the spectator area with all his gear on the back. My wife held him in the passenger seat (we were barely rolling). He loved it. During the event he was driving his trucks around his playpen while I was tooling around. Whenever I would drive by, he would stand up and shout DA-DA!, DA-DA! Not even a year old and he can pick my buggy out of a crowd of a dozen trucks.
He also loves sitting in the drivers seat with the lap belt on, grabbing the steering wheel, when the truck's parked at home.
