I'm adding provisions to my XJ to allow for periodic flat-tow hookup. Years ago I used to see people with tow bars lifted against the grill and strapped in place, but haven't seen it at all in the past ~15 years? Does anybody know the legality of this? I almost have enough vertical movement to strap the towbar against the grill but don't want to mess with it if it's not legal... I'd probably just end up smashing the plastic grill and fiberglass header panel anyway so better off not to do it

I've seen several people driving like that lately. Cant speak to the legality of it though.

I can't think of any reason it would not be legal?
I've seen it around as well.

biggest problem I can see is (a) figuring out how to attach it upi na vertical position so it cannot move/wiggle, which would be really annoying, or (b) having to look through/around it while driving.

Make sure you secure it very well. I worked with a guy years ago who had one on the front of his cj and lets just say when it came lose and fell at highway speed the cj lost.
