Hey guys
Like title says I have a question about shocks.
I installed an 8.8 in my 04 tj. I have a 4 inch coil lift in. well i bought some shocks for 4 inches of lift and there bottoming out. the shocks on the jeep right now only bottom out if I hit a bump hard but then are blow too, so i'm not sure if that is why.
Ok here are the measurements I have gotten so far
When the jeep is sitting flat I have 19 inch from body mount to axle mount for the shocks.
Most shocks for 4 inch lift are 14.5-15.5 inches collapsed. so i have about 4 -3inchs of travel. Should that be enough travel with shocks that actually work or should I look in to shocks for 2 inch lift?(the only think i'm worried about is when the shocks are flexing out, is the 2 inch shock long enough.....but most of them are not much smaller then the 4 inch ones)
thanks for any advice

I am not sure what you are saying.
Shocks for a 4" lift (around 15" collapsed) should be fine.

This is easy...take shocks off vehicle, flex vehicle out, measure distance between mounts at full compression and full droop, find shock that fits in those parameters with a bit left over at each end...

i'll measure again... how much travel should the shock have for driving down the road?

That should be right only if the newly installed 8.8 has the shock mounts in the right place. Do what Numidian said, measue it to get the exact length.

When the jeep is sitting flat I have 19 inch from body mount to axle mount for the shocks.
It's a standard 4" suspension lift, not a custom 4-link.
19" sitting flat is about the same as a TJ with 4.5" lift. This would lead me to believe the shock mounts are in the "right" place. The shocks should be approx 15" comp and 24" ext, give or take a half inch.

cool thats what i was looking for.....
i'm going to order the ones with 14.42 col and 23.83 ext.
the only other one i found close was 13.71 col and 22.58 est

I used these, before and after my 8.8 installation, with an RE 4.5" kit:

Measures extended length is 24.9" and collapsed is 15".

So you took the advice you were given and actually measured to get those numbers?
While I am sure ATJeep knows what he is talking about it would take very little of your time to unbolt the rear shocks and flex it out. Especially seeing how the shocks you bought for your 4" lift are working out so well for you now.

oh i'm going to measure... i know the sitting measurement i just need to go home and measure the flex one just to make sure.
i dont feeling like have to deal with returning shocks... or having a other set of shocks laying around in the house.

Not sitting, compressed. Actually flex the jeep out and compress the suspension otherwise you'll just wind up bottoming out again.

so i guess i was drunk when i took the first measurement....
so they are
21.5 flex and 16.5 sitting this is taken from middle of eye to eye.
now the best shock i have been able to find is
http://www.quadratec.com/products/16113_00.htm
I'm guessing that would leave me 3 inches(when sitting). Does that sound right?
