Anyone know how to tell what year vehicle a steering box came from? I've got one from an XJ but dont know the year. I know they should be pretty much all the same but the rebuild kits are different part numbers for different years. At least 1990-1995 and 1996-2001 are different numbers. The small pics I have found so far might just mean a difference in what all is included. I cant see seal colors to determine if they are different.

Looking at napa for a 98 and a 90 the input of each look different. I know my 98 and 87 have different style steering shafts.

I'll have to do some looking. A quick glance at rockauto.com shows that 2 companies list the same replacement part number for 1987 - 1998. One list the same number for 1987 - 1991 and a different one for 1998.

Here are a few things I see between the pics of a 98 and 90.

Might be older than 1998. It doesnt have that little tip on the input shaft.

No, the one that was on the jeep before the '91. I tapped it for 3/8" NPT instead of 1/4" on the '91 and plan to rebuild it.

Still need to figure out what box it is for sure but I went ahead and ordered Edelmann #8522. It is a very complete kit and the price was pretty good from rockauto.com as well.
The problem I found was that if you get a seal kit (Edelmann 8775) for a 1996 - 2001 its just that, a seal kit. I didnt find a rebuild kit for those years. I wanted to replace the bearings in the box and to do so on the newer boxes you have to buy them separately. They were included in the kit I bought and everything fits as it should.
