I'm currently in Syracuse NY for work and have noticed a lot of diesel trucks for sale and prices seem better then Maryland. I'm here for another two weeks, how would I go about buying a truck and tagging it so I can drive it home? (I have a rental car and only got my ticket one way and work will pay my miles home). Also how do I get around paying sales/registration tax in two states?

You'd need to get temp tags from MD. You shouldnt have to pay NY sales or registration tax. You'll pay the taxes when you get it back to MD and go to get permanent tags for it.
At least that is the way its worked for the cars I've bought out of state through private sellers. In any case you should not have to pay tax to the state you are buying it from. Only when you go into to register the vehicle in MD.
If its through a dealer they should be able to handle it for you as well as get you temp tags. Or again that is what they did when I bought my truck in VA. Its been to long ago to remember how the taxes were handled but I know I didnt pay VA taxes.

When I bought my F150 in PA, the dealer gave me a temp tag and they left all taxes, tag and title fees off. That was on me to get at the MVA when I got back to MD.

When I bought mine from VA (private party), I had to have it MD inspected. The MVA would not give me a temp tag of any sort to get it back here.

Thats very odd. I've never had a problem getting a temp tag, granted its been a while since I've needed one. The guy I bought the TDI from let me run home on his tags. He canceled them the next day and said pitch them. He didnt need to turn them in so he didnt much care.
The temp tags arent so temp any more. Its the real tag you'll eventually use it just expires in 15-30 days. You get new stickers when you get it fully registered.

I believe there is a tag called a transfer or transport tag that you can get for when you are purchasing out of state. If you are saying you won't be in MD before you go buy it your best bet would be to call a local licensed tag and title shop and ask them what they can do for you or recommend.
I would be leery of buying trucks in the NE because of bad rust/corrosion. Tahoes are cheaper up there to which I'm looking for but I'm holding out for one closer.

x2. When we bought Chris's WJ in VA last feb. Temp tag from VA, no taxes, went to barnes got it inspected and then mva paid taxes got new tag and title. We got it from a dealer, they did all the paperwork for the va temp tag.
I live in VA but everything's registered in MD. VA has a 3 day transport permit.
You have to fill out form DTF-803 to claim exemption of sales tax in NY state. DMV website has it and fill out an In-Transit Permit/Title Application

Thats bull. I got a temp tag to go get a car inspected before.

The person you talked to didn't know what they were talking about. VA will sell you a 3 day permit and MD will definitely give you a 25 day tag

I just picked up a 25 day tag for the RV because I wasn't finished with the inspection before the weekend. I was required to move the title over to my name though before they could issue a temp tag. So it is a different type of tag needed for transport.

You have to have purchased it already and need the title though. Then it's a tag for you to drive it to get it inspected and repaired. You can't get a tag without proof that you already purchased the vehicle.
I will say that just taking another MD tag off one of your current vehicles and driving it back is not such a good idea. Don't ask me how I know
They will give you a transport tag in the state you purchase in.
