As everyone probably knows I am running behind on the TJs. Things should move along quickly now as the rest of the parts finally trickle in and I finally have some time to devote to them. Need to do the front suspension then I will be onto the steering.

Here are some pics of the rear suspension. Stock TJ coils are going to work well in this application and get us that low cog. This should give us about 5" of uptravel and 7" of down. Frame end lower crossmember is 1.5" .250 wall tubing with a 25* bend in the middle. Frame end lowers will be moved 1" in toward the center to be sure the links will not hit the frame while articulating. Axle truss will get a plate in the middle of each side. Antisquat is 110%, pinion angle change throughout the 12" of travel is 6* which allows us to use a single ujoint driveshaft. Axle end uppers at full bump are level with the factory crossmember.

I am going to be doing less fab work from here on out. I will be contacting the people that have been waiting patiently for fab work to schedule. After those jobs I will only take on only a few custom jobs a year. There just isnt enough hours in the day, so dont get insulted when I say no to some work someone might want done.

Will it still turn lock to lock at full articulation? Or are you going to have to back off some as the tire stuffs into the fender?

Are you doing a beefed up steering pump with the hydro assist? I would suspect it's gonna take some power to turn the wheels that far since you are losing some mechanical leverage with the longer pitman arm.

Still turns lock to lock at full articulation thought I had some pics of turning driver with driver wheel stuffed but cant find it. It will have hydro assist but with the nearly perfect scrub radius it should take less power to turn because the tires arent trying to roll as they turn. This is one of the major benefits to running such offset wheels, which also allows this amount of steering without contact on frame or lower link.

For the hydro assist are you planning a pump upgrade? I didnt like the speed on mine much with the stock pump. Its better with the upgraded PSC TC pump but I think a P pump would be the better option.

Although a 1.5" ram might work better speed wise with a stock pump. I think, but need to double check, that mine is 1.75". You probably wouldnt notice any power loss with the smaller ram with the scrub radius you have.

I have a Saginaw pump that I had originally planned to use for the hydro assist, it's the canned ham pump, I think that is a P pump?
We'll try the stock pump to see how it goes.

That is a P pump, you should mod it yourself or send it out to be modified. It's worth the cost for the benefit in competition.

Is it a PSC pump? If so its probably already modded. If not then I think the West Texas Offroad mods would do well. It should already put put more GPM than the stock TC pump.

What size ram are you using? That will make the bigger difference with the stock pump I think. Not sure you'll be happy with the stock pump in a comp. I wasnt happy with the lack of speed in the driveway. It was noticeably slower.

I don't know which mod it is, but aftermarket pumps produce max flow at 600-800 rpms where a stock pump has to get 1200-1300 rpms to get max flow. The also flow slightly more and are higher pressure.

I'm pretty sure the West Texas is the same mod that all pump manufacturers are using. Just custom parts instead of modified stock parts.

atjeep
04-21-2010, 11:09 PM
Yup, the WT mods are to improve flow at low RPMs and boost pressure.

I worked on the tw2 until almost 2am sat morning while he was working on alan's jeep. I took it easy sat since it wasn't going to be possible to get the tw2 out on the trail sat. I'm pretty sure my wife doesn't even ask me anymore. I'm either coming home or I'll be hours....maybe days.

The suspension on this truck is awesome. Mr Bosley has outdone himself.

The low COG makes it really stable. Dan had a lot more confidence than I did and spotted me through some pretty twisty, off-camber lines. It always felt stable and solid. We had some drivetrain issues, which meant I had to power through some tough lines with not much control or finesse. The truck felt stable even when I was bouncing down off-camber lines way too fast.

The axle setup is pimp. The braking is better than it has ever been on this TJ. The steering is crazy. The tank-steer circles were an endless source of entertainment.

As I said, we had some drivetrain issues, but that was my department. :o Once we get those issues resolved this should be a kick ass truck.

The work AOI has done on this truck is top-notch.

They make these things, sometimes they have knobs on them, that let you shift the transfer case from the drivers seat.

And then you factor in the luck we have with D300s. :alan:

That seems pretty expensive and fancy when I have a spotter that is the Dana 300 expert and will crawl under my truck to shift it.

I actually broke the shifter cable, the t-case seems to be working fine. It did pop out of gear 3 times in the course of 6 hours of trail riding, but it never happened under load, only while we were driving access roads.

I am going to have to step up my driving skills to meet the skill level of the truck. :)
It is an awesome setup, especially when you consider it is a body on frame Jeep that meets Class 2 qualifications. Bosley had a lot of limitations in putting together a setup that will perform like a built rig but still fits in a set of measurements that are pretty close to stock. He has done an excellent job.
And for anyone who may be under the mistaken impression that any of the difficulty I have had is related to the work done by AOI, let me clear the air. ALL of the problems I have had so far have been caused by work done by me. AOI's work has performed flawlessly.

Mattchris would not know what to do with a Jeep than can go slower than 10mph..

Don't worry. No one was under that impression. :flipoff2:

It is a killer rig, and I am extremely jealous. I will never look at an isuzu axiom the same way again.

HA ... Alan taught me everything I know. The problem is most likely dan :flipoff2: If Alan could clone himself and spot while he drives then he would win!

 Alan did a tank turn up at RC last weekend, and the circle was so small that it looked like a quad was doing donuts. :brow:
