View Full Version : Un-runner.... Fix it? Part it out?

The more I think about my 4runner, the more pissed off I get about it. I've got somewhere in the vicinity of $10,000 wrapped up in it... If i parted it out, if I got top dollar for everything, I could MAYBE get $4,000. As it sits as a whole right now, I'm pretty sure I'd struggle to get $3000, considering the overall shape and the repairs it needs.

Now as for the truck, as it is right now it's not running. Andy and I stripped the harness down to what we hope is just the engine harness (Body and engine harness are all one in 4runners and pickups) when I was home at the end of summer. Andy then put a lot of time into the wiring harness, but it's still not running yet.

After the wiring harness gets put together, it needs a lot of tube work done up front because we removed the fenders/core support, basically all the sheetmetal, so everything that mounts to that stuff from the factory has to have brackets and tabs made up to mount it to either tubes or the firewall.

And even after that gets done, I've still just got a half assed buggy with horrible approach and departure angles running half bald 35's.

If I want to run bigger tires, well then I'm going to have to put new springs and a new crossmember up front(which it pretty much needs either way, but it's been holding up to the 35's so I've pretty much just let it be). Not to mention then I have to buy new tires. And that is pretty much neccesary if I want to keep wheeling with the core of the Creepers who are at most Big Dogs.

Not to mention that in another 2 months, I'm going to be starting my clinical rotations for school. So even if we get the truck back together, I'd be shocked if I was able to make it out 3 times in the next year.

I really don't feel like spending anymore money on the damn truck trying to fix it and get it running. Not to mention the money if I want to try and keep up with the Joneses...

I'm really thinking I should just part it out, maybe buy a gun with some of it and sit on the rest and when I graduate in another year, I can buy something already built, if I still have the itch to wheel.

I guess the reason for this post, is just to bounce it off the people who know me and know this sport and see if there is something I'm missing...

Can you put a $ amount on getting it ready to wheel? I think you will be happy if you can wheel it a few more times. Who cares if it has bald tires, just go out and have fun. Find a way you can make it through the trail. You already said if you part it you will buy a gun, which you have many of. You don't need the cash so keep it around if it won't cost you too much.

I wouldn't put a lot of $$ in it though, like you said, its a half ass buggy with horrible approach angle. And don't try to keep up now, just get out there and have fun, when you don't have decent income "keeping up" will be impossible, and you can have just as much fun without keeping up.

I would put a little more $ into it and hit the trails a few more times even if you have to step it down a bit and run blue trails. At one time we all had fun running the easier trails. And their is a lot more to a wheeling trip than just the wheeling.

I had more fun running the Moderate stuff and being able to run all weekend with out tearing my rig up then i did running the more extreme shit breaking and spending 1/2 the day laying under it in a mud puddle trying to patch it up enough to drag it of the trail only to top it off by missing the next 2 runs cause I didn't have the time or cash to fix my broken rig.

Eventually I will get my TJ trail ready again and when I do I plan to step it down a bit.

Umm with the money invested I'd say try to fix it right.. You already dumped money in it.. To start off fresh would still probably end up costing you more.. Is it just the wiring harness that is preventing it from running?

I'm with thw others, just do what's needed to get it going, and enjoy it as-is at that point running whatever you can.
Who/what are you trying to "keep up with"? everybody knows yer a collegw kid w/ minimal time/money to invest in it, no big expectations there.
After hearing this same story from so many folks, I'm enjoying being perfectly content w/ "blue" level capability.

This FTW! :D

But seriously, just get it running again and go wheel it. You will regret it 6 months from now if you get rid of it. Wheeling is addictive and you will be trying to build something new in a year. If you need tires I still have the 35" cut boggers sitting in the shop I would be willing to sell dirt cheap or possibly trade for gun parts or ammo. Wheel that bitch as is and in a year or two when you have the cash drop the drivetrain in the bent fab truck chassis and wheel it some more.

For a minimal amount of money, I will have a 92 Xtra cab body and frame for sale real soon. Already setup for SAS and 58" rear springs. Just install your drivetrain and go.

how much harness trouble do you have?
can you get it to turn over by any means (how much is computer control)?
I agree if you spend 2-3 weeks working on it with minimal
money $200 tops you would be happy hitting some trails.
Just put it in ur mind to just make it past the Fall and then scrap it
or scrap it and get a cheep xj and trash that

never posted it. Un-decided stiill but im debating about getting out of wheeling and building a street rod. Kinda tired of a hobby that i get to do once a month or even less and costs me money in-between trips in repairs. At least with a car i can play all year ect. After the kids are born, and everything settles down i may buy another rig.

Buy/TRADE lol my 76 lincoln 460,C6,9in. all you need is a fox body ford something to keep it all in and run 11's :D

I'll warn you though the street rod idea sucks just as bad as wheeling does money wise.

But a street rod doesn't have to be constantly breaking shit... And you can go cruising any time you get the desire... You don't have to trailer the car 2 hrs away and pay $35+ for a day of wheeling...
