Is there a specific MD law about where your exhaust must exit the vehicle?
E.g. can it just be cut off up under the cargo/bed area (pointing down), or must it clear the side/end of the vehicle?

I have Historic tags FWIW, but I'm stil ltrying to stay as much within the law as possible.

Not that it helps with the cops but I have one of my xj's ending before the rear axle and have been through emissions several times like that. Though the vehicle the just check the obdll.

I don't see anything about location but there are other quals that might catch you

You're going to want it to come out of the side anyway. If you cut it like you're talking, I'm pretty sure that the exhaust would easily wash back into the truck, with the rear window down, at low speeds.

Yea I was going to comment that you drive this thing around with your family in it right? I'm sure you want the exhaust exiting the rear of the vehicle to avoid fumigation of the cab.....

Then I was like, eh he's smarter then that I'm sure he has a solution that addresses this to.....

No idea on the legality sorry!

I believe it has to exit past the furthest back window that opens... ie the back of your 4runner.

Legally with historic tags I doubt anyone will ever hassle you. I run historic tags on my far from legal 89 4runner and I have never had an inspection ticket problem. Best part is when I did get pulled over for running a stop sign the cop just kinda looked at it shook his head and said "put your damn seat belt on if your not going to have doors" :D. Cop was super cool let me go with a warning for the stop sign and didn't do anything about my 37's hanging out of cut fenders, no doors, no seatbelts (in use anyway), both tail lights were smashed, no turn signals, and my exhaust just barely gets past where my seat is.

You will smell it if you leave it there, I personally don't mind and it hasn't killed me yet:flipoff2:. However, you said this is a family rig so I wouldn't chance it just run it all the way back. Last thing you want is a truck full of pissed off wife and kids with headaches lol.

My truck is obd2 (2000 Tacoma), and I was refused emissions testing because my exhaust pipe ended above the rear axle. I had to go extend it and come back. They didn't even treadmill test it.

I believe and dont qoute me, the law states it must exit 2' past the passenger compartment. This was the rule of thumb when we were inspecting Jeeps/Dodges at the dealer I used to work at.

Right now, it goes to about half way along the rear Q-panel behind the wheel well, has a 90 bend and exits there. What I was thinking was to just cut it off right before that bend, so that it would be a good bit past the axle and just maybe 2 feet(?) from the rear bumper.
Def past any passenger areas, but yes, probably increases chances of sucking it in. i have a rather inconvenient (and common) rust hole on the fender ight att he back of that wheel well.
Of course right now i have a HUGE hole in the muffler, I'm sure thats alot worse.
