Ok, so a handfull of friends and myself are looking for a fun weekend of camping, and was wondering, is George Washing and Jerfferson National parks the best choice around the northeast Baltimore Corridor area? We were looking for more secluded than a camp spot with cable tv and hear the highway from the camp sight... It would be nice to tag along with someone who has been out there before etc as its been a LONG time since a decent camping trip....
suggestions? planned trips?

GWNF sounds like exactly what you are looking for.

G.W. and Jefferson National Forest are in Va in the Shenandoah out on I-81 and 66...about 1.5 hrs South-West of Baltimore.
Little Fort(remote campsite pay on honor system Ranger patrolled). Woodstock tower is just down the road from Little Fort. There are some trails that I have been on that open up to a pond with camp area. Its been 2 yrs since I last ran out there....if you do trails you have to buy a day pass, cheep like 8-10$ but it keeps you out of the rangers hair. I picked mine up from one of the local gas/convenience stores...just ask where you can buy a offroad pass.

You can also hit Savage State Forest in MD. Very light wheeling, but amazing camping.

Agree with that Dan...I have not wheeled out there(alway towing a camper) but camped many times at Savager River Reservoir/Big Run area and New Germany. You still need to get a offroad pass at the Ranger station next to New Germany entrance.

Yeah, we want more than a gravel fire road (obviously) but no one in the group that wants to go has anything more than minor lifts and a skidplate here and there.... just "wanna get away"

Savage there is some stream forging mostly like ATV trails from what I have seen deff not gravel roads...those are roads to get to the camp sites not back on the trails...there are designated trail heads on the sides of the roads that you enter in on.
Trails on GW and Jefferson might be more challenging...I did fine with 2in on xj out near Little Fort.

Greenridge State Forest is closer than Savage. Lots of primitive camping sites along dirt roads, and an 18 mile offroad loop. The offroad loop can be done in stock vehicles. Some good camp sites down by the river also.

Greenridge is in Maryland, but the web page says it is closed to camping and ORV right now.

Probably due to the fact that Western MD has had record snow this year, and I think they are getting hit with another foot or two today and tomorrow.

Pretty much, but there are some places where the trail turns or forks.

Hey I bet that Greenridge 18 mi loop would be FUN right now...

I went out there after a 10" snowfall once. I had no problem with most of the regular dirt roads. I took a look at the beginning part of the easier side of the loop, and decided that I wanted to make it home. It gets pretty difficult with snow pack on the ground.

ATJeep's link has it. Sometimes you have to do a little reading. There is a shooting range.
