View Full Version : Home built trailer title
Anyone know the ins and outs of this? What exactly I need to do to get this done for a dual axle car trailer? I have heard in that past that is simple. The best I can get from the MVA website is that they need 3 pictures, and I need to fill out a form. Is it really that easy?
Any reason you don't want to just put a Maine Trailer tag on it? They don't need a title at all.
Lifetime Arizona tag will run me $125 if I can get it titled.

will it need to be titled in AZ to register for the AZ tag?
Yes. I just need some sort of title to give to my sister to get the AZ title.

The AZ lifetime reg sounds good, but dealing with MD MVA brings the suck. Don't bother trying to re-invent the wheel, just do the ME reg and be done with it.

It looks like, for a home built car at least, you have to have the vehicle at the MVA/DMV in order to get it tagged and registered.
If you can do that you probably dont need a title. If you cant do that I wouldnt bother trying to go through MD for one. I'd just go ME like Rippy said.

I did the home built trailer thing a few years back. They needed to know everything from what you used, the excat size of the trailer, 3 pics, front back and side and how much it cost you. It wasnt a big deal, just a extra step compared to buying one and going that route.

I literally have no paperwork for the trailer. Still possible to do a Maine tag?

My co-worker did this i know that. He had to get it inspected as part of the deal...i think the process is on the MVA's website somewhere though. I can ask him what all he had to do if you don't have the answer by monday.
Please do. The MVA website sucks when it comes to this topic. I know how to title a regular trailer, but homebuilt is a PITA.

Wow, in NC you have to take it to the DMV and they inspect it, then give you a VIN plate to stamp on it.

VA lifetime tag is $52. Requires title and annual inspection tho. It is not an in-depth inspection in my experience, they check all the lights, bearings/brakes on one wheel and safety brake is operational.
Does it also require VA residency?

Yearly inspection would suck ass. Especially since you don't live in VA.

It's also only enforceable in VA, so if you don't ever go to VA, it's great :D

Did this (home built title) my my M416 trailer awhile back. Bought it up in NJ and it was without title. MVA just wanted pictures of the trailer and an inspection. When I took the paper work to the MVA the lady looked at the pictures and said "did you make this from a truck bed?" and I answered "yes". Done deal - they give you a ID plate to mount on the trailer. I was able to have the inspection done at the local gas station because it doesn't have brakes. Good luck - I hate dealing with the MVA.

I did the same thing with my M101, however back then they didn't require an inspection. I took the pictures to the MVA and the old hag behind the counter called me a liar when I told it was homemade. The supervisor came over and told her you can't call the customers liars, which the hag responded, "but he's lying!" The supervisor told her, if the customer says he made the trailer, then he made the trailer. Now issue him the tags and registration. She did as she was told, but she was PISSED about it.
