I was with a buddy the other day and he was showing me his sidewall patch, I'm just an electrician so I'm a little slow but I thought sidewall patches were impossible.
Help me out here

I would not recommend it for highway use. With that said, I have a buddy that patched his sidewall with six "Monkey Grip" plugs about two years ago. He still wheels that tire to this day and I have personally seen him fold the tire over a rock directly on the plugs and it doesn't even so much as leak air. Go figure.

I've got a sidewall plug in one of my 35's, but I think they're held together by voodoo anyway
Had a sidewall patch on a set of 33's I got for free a while back. never leaked and I wheeled the crap out of that tire. drove it on the street to get beer but that's about it

I remember back when Yingling Tire was still open in Westminster and the guy that sold them the patches used to give the managers a hard time because they WOULDN'T use his product to patch sidewalls. The rep from the company said it was totally doable.
Doable to get off the trail and wheel, but I wouldn't drive on it at highway speed.

I had a tree branch puncture a sidewall on a 37 SSR and had it repaired with a vulcanized patch from inside. I only use if for a spare.

My guess is the key is that we're talking about tires not used at full pressure or high speeds
