View Full Version : CTD died

The sumbitch just shut off as I was towing. I tried several times to start it. No luck. I cranked for as long as 15 seconds.
1. Has fuel, even put an additional 2 gallons in it. Low fuel light is on, but shows close to 1/8 tank. I pulled the fuel filter out of the housing. It's full of fuel.
2. I checked for codes. Nothing.
3. No other trouble signs until it died out of nowhere.
4. Has 14# fuel pressure after cranking. Had good fuel pressure up until it went to hell.

WTF. I had to be rescued by a 6oh. :dan1:

You check all the fuses both in-cab and under the hood? Possibility of it being a relay?

I will when I get back over to it.

sounds to me like you ran it out of fuel and its air locked

my fuel gauge used to be accurate but went to hell. I run out of fuel with 3/8 of a tank on the gauge now. It gradually got worse. Try a little starter fluid and see if it fires with that. That way you know if its a fuel or electric problem.

If you ran it out of fuel adding more and cranking it will not get it going. You will need to either prime the fuel system(pita) or use a little starter fluid to get it to catch and prime on its own.

When we were trying to get the 4bt going in the CJ I had to go to the rival gas station at the end of my road to buy 12 more gallons of fuel :mikey:. Then we had to pressurize the fuel tank to get the fuel up to the motor. I stuck a rag in the fuel filler and gently sqeezed about 5 psi into the tank with the line at the filter cracked. Once we got fuel up to the filter, then we had to crack injector lines. Once we did that, she fired right up.

I have a fuel cap I modified to add a valve stem just for that purpose. It sits in my toolbox and has been used several times on the truck. Makes changing the filter, swapping the injectors, changing the lift pump, etc much easier. Dont go to crazy on the pressure though, 10-15 PSI should be sufficient.

wow, i've had 4 different vp44's, and 8 different sets of injectors in my truck and never had to pressurize the tank. crack 2 injector lines at the head, crank for 30 seconds, then tighten them up and crank again and it will fire within 10-15 seconds usually

I didn't have time to dick with it today. It actually died less than 100 yards from a Dodge dealership. I will just ponyup the cash for them to get it going. Fawk.

I made the fuel cap deal when I replaced all the fuel line under the hood on my '97. No amount of cranking and cracking was going to do the trick. I've used it since then because its extremely simple, quick and easy.

This is some interesting math.....

The gauges still shows 1/8 tank. It is a 34 gallon tank. I put 33+ gallons in it. When I bought the truck, the light went on at 1/8 tank, but 27 gallons would top it off.

Yep that's definitely MD Democrat math. Welcome back.

See my post above, I run out with 3/8 on the gauge now. You need to replace the sending unit or gauge fuel based on miles per tank.

lol, this is a new low Dan, sending your truck to the dealer for them to inform you that you are out of fuel.

 I think this one needs to be deleted too.

My gauge can read 1/4 tank or less shortly after filling up or it can read completely full. In any event I have learned to go by mileage vs what my tank says. When in doubt I just stop and fill it up.

As I understand, it's a pretty damned common problem for 2nd gen's fuel gauge to go bad. I was 4 hours from home without a single tool, and the truck died right beside their parking lot. At least it only cost me $73 for them to take care of it while I had to go back to Johnstown. The odd thing is that the fuel pressure gauge didn't go below 14psi. I'm sick of driving. That makes four 500 mile round trips in 10 days, two of them were towing.

the bitch is that you have to replace the whole sending unit to fix the fuel guage. and that is either dropping the tank or pulling the bed i havent decided which is easier. mine needs to be done aswell i can fill up completely and my fuel light will come on 5 miles down the road.

My guage went bad one day, and hasnt worked since, i tried 2 new sending units that didnt fix it. I ended up giving up on it and finding an autometer fuel level gauge that had the closest ohms range to the stock sender, and wired it directly to the sender myself. it works pretty good, even tho when it says E, i still have almost a 1/4 tank left...leaves me a little room for error.

of course these days it doesnt matter, my truck doesnt get driven anymore, and my tank stays filled with no more than 10 gallons of diesel and about a gallon of cetane boost

Yup, my old truck had the same problem with the fuel gauge. I would fill it up and the gauge would peg on the full mark. 30 miles later, it would sit on 1/4 of a tank and stay there until I filled it the next time. My brother in law ended up replacing the whole sender module in the tank. I think it was around the $300 mark.

Live and learn....yet again. This was cheap in comparision to most shit that happens to me.

lol

I can't win, huh.

Damn. I would bet most of that is labor charges.

Shit, I doubt I can do that anymore. I need to start with square 1: key in ignition.

The only good that came of this was that my loaner was a pretty pimp S80. :chair:
