I know ford and dodge have goods ones (12v, 7.3) and bad (6.0, dodge tranies). What can ya'll tell me about chevy/gmc trucks in the 90+ years? good, bad, best or worst years, common problems, engines, power/tq........

Are you talking the 6.5 era or the Duramax?

Either way, Duramax or 6.5, the transmisison is going to be pretty good. Allison or 4L80e.

the dodge 47re def had its problems but i am very surprised at how well the 48re in the 3rd gens hold up. 100k on my fathers and it still has no problem pulling 15k down thru the hills of WV. ive even seen a few stock trannies with well over stock power (450-500 vs 325 stock) that can still tow and hold up as long as the driver doesnt abuse and slip it, you have to know how to drive it.
that being said i still admit that allison and fords newest trannies are def beasts and will hold up to more aftermarket power in most cases.

This is Dodge and Ford territory around here....Look out...
I had a 03 and now a 08 Duramax and have not had one single problem. The 03 had the Edge and ran like a rapped ape. The 08 is bone stock and will pull a house down but is not all that quick.
Here is where you can get all your answers. There are alot of Dodge and Ford guys who frequent the site but its mainly for Chevy Diesels..

Okay Just get a later model deisel 10th vin digit is a 1 or 2 i believe. They have external fuel injectors that arent as bad to change as the old internal ones, injectors are the problem areas but they come w/ 200k warranty, the EGR coolers sometimes get plugged up and have issues. As stated trans are very good in these trucks. the latest models have the stupid DPF and regen cycle that we've seen some problems with but only in tow trucks that idle a lot.
We just got a later model gmc quad cab short bed w/ 60k on it in trade that has the duramax/allison trans in it, My price would be around 20k i have no idea what theyre selling it for

I had a 96 K3500 with a 6.5td, loved the truck but I don't think the 6.5 was really built to tow heavy weight. I keep the truck for 8 years and only used it to tow and was happy but not thrilled with how it, as far as pulling power. I traded it on a new D-Max and it is like night and day. I however do have a 96 Suburban with 200k on it and it is my DD and gets 19+ mpg. I also wheel a K5 with a 6.2.
