There's also another agency that Mike used, in case you're worried about Stabb's legal issued. Shouldn't be a problem though, I have a 5 year tag on my flatbed that's through them.

Oh Ok. Any word if they have settled the issue? I don't have a problem using them, as long as my Money doesnt disappear before I get tags.

There is also no need to title the trailer, so you don't have pay greedy MD their 6%.
$90 for 5 years vs the buttraping MD charges for 2.

Dan What is PA registration like 60 bucks for 5 years. The no inspection and title would be nice for the guys with home made trailers.

I think it's $16/year and $130 lifetime? You do need an annual inspection though, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. If I were in PA when I bought mine, I would have done that.

mbi was really easy and only 90 bucks for 5 years and helps me because i have no title for my trailer and no need for inspection. much better then going through the home made crap.

MBI worked out great!
E-mailed copy of title and they said I should have my tag in about 10 days.

So if I build a trailer from scratch I can just get these guys to title/register it? It can't be that easy...

Building a trailer from scratch is dumb considering how cheap a used trailer can be had.

Can you buy an all steel tag-along trailer that can handle 10K lbs and is 20ft long for under 600 bucks? (Thats all I've got in mine, Materials tires to titleing(sp)) I think building from scratch was the way to go for me at the time. (Had very little money) I'm hoping I can make alittle off of it in the future and buy a nice gooseneck.
I haven't seen one yet similar to what I described above for under 1K.
But I'm one of those "wants something for nothin" kinda guys.
I'm not sure what MBI can do about titles for homemade. My opinion would be to get it titled in MD. (I don't think you need it inspected to do this) and then have it taged in Maine. If for some reason a law poped up that would prevent out of state tags you wouldn't have to pay the titling fee again to get it into MD to get tags. Just my opinion though.

Did you buy all the material you needed or did you have it sitting around? If sitting around did you consider its value now vs when you bought it? Because using the cost from when you got it doesnt do much good to a person looking to build now. How much do you make an hour and how long did it take you to build it? Your time is money as well so I am pretty sure that your $600 amount will come up at that point.
I am all for building what you can if you can but some times its not cost effective. And I love reading threads were guys say "yeah I built it for $20 using scrap I had laying around." That scrap that you used had to cost something at some time and I bet it wasnt no $20.

Even better are the people who build a truck for $200...with tires and axles they already had in their garage :lol:

Tires, axles, motor, tube, seats, etc. Because none of that cost them anything. During this build anyway but we can ignore that little fact. Yep gotta love those.

I actually have a paper with all of the costs on it but I can't find it.
I built it in 05 I had to buy the frame and axel's and all of the material at the time I build it. I didn't have anything.
(accept a hitch)
To me I wouldn't count my time as money. I was probably making around 10 bucks an hour at the time. But when I'm sitting at home doing nothing no one is paying me anyway. I just can't count that in. I know it makes people feel better when they count there time. That way it REALLY looks like they saved alot of money. But if I think of what I will really be doing at that time. I ain't getting paid.
Just my opinion on building vs buying. It may well be cheaper in the long run to buy depending on how you look at it.

May very well be dumb. But it's hard to justify paying $3k for the trailer I want, when I can build it for $1k. I enjoy building things and want a lot of details that trailer places always charge boku bucks for.
That wasn't the point of my question or this thread however.
I just wanted to know if I scratch built a trailer if I could title/reg it in Maine w/o any sort of previous title or inspection.

talk to the guy at mbi about what you have and what you want to do. i got tags and registration but no title because it was over so many years old. so just say that its old and just get the tags with out the title. they were really helpful, i did not even have a vin number or make but i still got tags, just used a bill of sale i made.

So, I gotta ask...
does the great state of MD have some beef with this?
I mean technically if you reside in MD, are you required to register your trailer here, vs someplace else?
Of course application of said "beef" is another issue.

I think It has something to do with the trailer spending a certain percentage of its road miles outside of your home state I believe. Going places like RC and Big Dogs its not much of a stretch.
I don't remember the actual percentage.

I have 5 trailers currently registered in ME
i just did three of them in the past few months.
75.00 for a 5 year tag. they always end the last day of feb of that ending year. If the title is already in your name
you need to copy title on both sides and fill out an affidavit to get in their system
you need to show proof that you paid sales tax for a private to private sale
on the last trailer I did last week it was from private to business so I had to send them the actual title since it was not in my name yet i think it was a 36.00 fee vs MD 50.00 fee and no taxes needed to be paid only because it was from a private individual to a business sale. here is who I use they are very friendly and it only takes about a week to have the tags in your mail box.

How do you get around titleing the trailer in your own name if you buy it from a private individual? I called MBI and they said ME doesn't title trailers under 3k #'s.
I bought a new to me car trailer this weekend and would love to avoid titling in MD if possible. Do you just never process the title?

Lets bring this back up to the top.....
I just bought a 24' Goose, picking it next saturday. The Dealer is having it MD inspected and Temp Tags on it. So to get hard tags in MD I have to pay taxes and get the plates. If I tag it in Maine, do I pay taxes? If I do, to who, MD or Maine?

No because I got temp tags. You pay taxes when you get hard tags.

Do you have a maryland title for it? That is when you should be taxed when you register it for a title not a tag.

I'm pretty sure that's what I did with mine. I wanted it titled in Maryland, but I tagged it in Maine.
I seem to remember something about not needing to title it if you tag it from Maine, but I'm not positive.

From what the dealer told me, I will have a 60day temp tag, and the title will be in the mail in my name in 2 - 3 weeks. He said when I go to get Hard Tags from the MVA I will pay the Taxes and Tags Fee.
So If I have a MD Title in my name and Order up the Maine Tags, I'm bypassing the MD taxes? Or will MD come back at me for them?
I'm confused!

No MD taxes if you go that route. I bought my trailer in VA but it had PA tags on it and a PA title. I never once did a thing about it in MD. Buyer, Tom Guaraldo actually, let me mail the tags back to him so I could get the trailer home. Signed and sent my paperwork to ME and that was that.
I still have a PA title that is signed by him and a piece of paper from ME plus my tag.
