We at Ballpeen Racing have decided to build a new Jeep for the 09 season. I searched high and low for the perfect truck and settled on the first and only on I looked at. ;D
We will be building a YJ for 09. Here is a list of future specs=
stock 4 cylinder
Auto
flipped Dana 300
HP Dana 30 with 4.56 gears Detroit Locker with chromoly shafts .
Dana 44 with 4.56 gears and a Track-lock.
Custom cage
Warn winch
4" lift
Wheel base extended 1" front and rear.
Flat belly pan
That should cover the big stuff.
Here is what we are starting with.

My spotter for 09 Mike and my son Trent. Trent might be a better spotter but I think Mike will do the best he can. ;D

The jeep weighs 3400 pounds the way it sits with me in it and a half a tank of gas.

I have been collecting parts over the holidays. I picked up a Dana 300 and a 999 out of a 99ish TJ. The auto was rebuilt about 10,000 miles ago.
So this is how the trans and case bolted together.
http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk300/ballpeenracing/rc008.jpg
This was not going to work on a driver side drop YJ. So I made a very high tech pattern of the bolt circle of the 999.
http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk300/ballpeenracing/yj003.jpg
I marked the top of the trans and then marked my pattern with the same clocking. I mocked up the 300 and marked the case to line up with the 999.
http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk300/ballpeenracing/yj001.jpg
I drilled and tapped the new rotation only breaking 2 drill bits and 1 tap. Haha
http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk300/ballpeenracing/yj002.jpg
I need to get some studs to put into the case before I can do the final assembly. Now the fun part will be putting it in.

We bought a used AGR power steering box from AJ at Condon's Auto parts. So I figured I would throw it on while I was working on the front of the Jeep. The Jeep had other ideas. One 5 foot breaker bar later I had the pitman arm off. Then the low-pressure line broke off the reservoir and to top it off the high pressure line broke at the box.
I am glad all this happened in the garage, if it were at a comp it would have brought the suck. ;)

Ballpeen Racing is proud to announce that we are teaming up with Appalachian Offroad Inc (AOI) and Sands Service Max inc (SSM) for the 09 season. Mike and the guys at AOI will be fabricating a custom roll cage and grill hoop. I look forward to the beginning of April when I will have the YJ ready for AOI to do their thing. AOI can handle any of your 4x4 needs from installing a lift kit to building you a turn-key buggy. Tell them Kane sent you.

Now on to the update. The front end is almost done. Just a few more details like reassembly of the knuckles and such. I ended up going with some BDS 2.5" lift springs that I had lying around. These will have to do until I can find a good deal on a 4" kit. I hope to get a set of chromoly axles in the front before the first comp. We will get some fresh pix up latter in the week when the front end is 100%.
What is the best way to go for chromoly axles in the Dana 30?
I do have some sponsors that I would like to add to the Ballpeen Racing family.
STOUT products is coming on board this year to help out with the 09 season. Stout is a local Family owed company located in Finksberg MD.
We will be using a set of Stout Rock sliders and a Stout rear bumper to show you how tuff there stuff really is.

I picked up my rear today from Perry Hall Power today. Ron had what we thought was a XJ Dana 44, that turned out to be a Metric ton rear out of a export only YJ.
Rear spec's are as follows.
YJ Dana 44
4.56 spicer gears
trackloc
front YJ rotors
GM metric calipers
Speedway brackets

I worked on the Rear for the Jeep today. I got the diff cover platted and cleaned up the anchor on the bottom of the housing and cut off the spring perches. I also had time to make the spring plates. Sunday we plan to get the rear installed and maybe make a rear shaft.

Mounted shifter.
Installed some old rims and tires that I had.

How about some simple drive-shaft tech. There are many ways to shorten a shaft and this is just the way I do it.
http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk300/ballpeenracing/Ballpeen%20YJ/yj2001-2.jpg
I use a pipe cutter to cut the yoke off as close to the weld as possible. Then take a whizer wheel and cut the weld on the yoke. I then cut the tube perpendicular to the weld.
http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk300/ballpeenracing/Ballpeen%20YJ/yj2002-2.jpg
I then use a cold chisel to split the tube and unwrap it from the yoke.
http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk300/ballpeenracing/Ballpeen%20YJ/yj2003-2.jpg
I then put the drive-shaft in the vice and use a angle finder to level it and then using the angle finder on the top of the yoke to make sure it is level. Then you just tap the yoke in making sure the yokes are in the same plane. Then weld that junk up and you will have a decent drive-shaft for your trail rig.
http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk300/ballpeenracing/Ballpeen%20YJ/yj2004-1.jpg
I may have skipped some grinding and filing but if you did not figure that out maybe this is not for you.
Happy April fools day.

I got the skid about half way done on Saturday. I need to add some mounting tabs and build the oil pan skid and it will be complete.
I finally found a use for my HF pipe bender, at least part of it any way. It worked great for adding the small bends I needed for the cross-member.

I have been working on it some sence the last comp. We got a newsed KM2 so now we have one that is brand new and one that is 90% with 2 plugs in the sidewall. The 2 on the rear are like 40%.

Before the 3rd rcrocs last year I was the first to pull into staging. After I got it off the trailer I turned the jeep around. Mindy asked "what was wrong with my axle cause one of the tires wasn't turning and the jeep didnt need to make a large circle to turn". So I would say it works very well.
On pbb some people were calling it a 3-wheel burn and said it makes a tigher turn than a front dig. When I tried mine the rear tire that was locked only moved forward less than a foot during the 180*turn.

the only thing wrong with it was it hadn't caught on fire yet at that point.

If you have cutting brake handles like Kane you can do them even more effectively with a little momentum and forward thinking. I want to test drive this thing around the staging area:thumbsup:

Don't feel bad. Most of the guys in class 1 & 2 did not get it either.:)
Yeah I just read the rules and once my Zuk was in class 3 (on 33s) I said nevermind and stopped reading :)

We had another good event up at RCrocs. The Thursday I was not so sure we would even make it because of some drive-ability issues with the YJ. A quick call to Mike at AOI to get some ideas of what to look for was invaluable to fixing it and insuring a trouble free event. Thanks again AOI.
On with the pix.

I got the skid about half way done on Saturday. I need to add some mounting tabs and build the oil pan skid and it will be complete.
Here is a sneak peek at the belly pan.
http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk300/ballpeenracing/Ballpeen%20YJ/yj2004-3.jpg
What is the big "design" in the middle of the skid? Is it from the bracing you added or did you weld two pieces together? Did you use 3/16" or 1/4"? It also looks like you ran some bracing around the driveshaft cut out?
Main section of the skid is done. You can see the bracing in this pic.
http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk300/ballpeenracing/Ballpeen%20YJ/yj2001-5.jpg
Is the bracing just strips of some 3/16" or 1/4" steel? Its kind of hard to tell in the pic but I assume you ran some front to back in spots and the rest side to side?
I am trying to build it bump proof. Skid is done. :)
http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk300/ballpeenracing/Ballpeen%20YJ/yj2002-6.jpg
It looks like it but I just wanted to double check that the skid plate is 100% flat?

I ran small 1x1 box tubing on mine for bracing. It still bent. :dan1:

The skid was made out of 1/4" plate. Really just made from scrap I had laying around. The skid was not totally flat. The design in the middle is were it had to drop down slightly for the cross-member if I remember correctly.
I may be building another one soon. I will post a build thread if it all works out.

Ah, I was wondering about that. I am hoping to get the cross member up high enough to have a flat skid. I'll find out today I guess.

I really wanted that too and probably could've done it with a 231 or 300, but much like Frank, the Atlas had way to much girth for a flat belly.

For the most part I did not massage the floor for clearance. There was more room to be had.

I had already cut part of the floor out and done some massaging to get things to fit with my GoFerIt belly up. I had to clock the tcase pretty high. While it gives me a flat skid plate it hangs down an inch or more below the frame rail. I think I can get things tucked up to run a skid plate that sits like yours to get an extra inch or so belly clearance. I clocked the tcase back down on hole and so I can push it up a bit more.
Alright, enough of the thread jack. :D
