I have an 86 CJ7 with a 350. When I was replacing the fuel pump, I think I shorted the alternator by touching the screw on the back with a wrench to the frame. long story.....

Anyway, the next day i drove the Jeep and the volt meter was not sitting at 12, and the battery died. Replaced the battery and the replaced the alternator, just to be safe. So, new Battery and Alternator. I was driving home last night and saw the volt meter dropping from 12 to about 10. I got it into the garage, shut it off, and dead again.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A buddy said there might be a fuse, checked the fuse box, could not find any and made sure none were blown to be safe.

Is it a one-wire alternator? Check to make sure the wire is telling the alternator to charge.

if not a one-wire alternator you could have fried the regulator too. I don't know a whole lot about your setup, but i've gotten a late 80's ford truck regulator to work with a 3 wire alternator.

IIRC the stock wiring should have a fuseable link in the wiring between the main charge post on the back of the alt and the starter solenoid. Test the resistance between those two points to see if that burnt out. This would keep your new alt from charging the bat.

There is one wire that runs to the back of the alternator that attaches to a nut. There is also 2 wires that are in a harness that clip into the alternator. As you can see, not that mechanically inclided.

more than likely the fusable link is gone. Probably wrapped up in some tape so you might have to search for it.

It would be part of the wire that attaches to the nut.

thank you all. It was a wire. Someone (previous owner) spliced a 16-18 gauge wire in. For whatever reason, god only knows and like you all said buried it in protective shielding and then taped it over. Took a bit, but I found a broken wire. Patched back with 10 gauge wire, and runs like a champ.

Thanks again for the help
